Letter from the Executive Director
Fostering inclusive and equitable campus environments is critical to student success. I am deeply saddened by the decision of UNL leadership to dissolve the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. In the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), our work is focused on creating a just society for everyone, not just a select few. It’s about recognizing that some individuals have been granted privileges while others have been left out, whether intentionally or unintentionally. The impacts of systemic racism, heterosexism, ableism, sexism, and xenophobia are deeply ingrained in many of our institutions, and the work done by DEI departments is often misunderstood and undervalued.
This work is challenging and does not come without controversy or conflict. But true progress requires us to step out of our comfort zones. Decisions made out of fear or a lack of courage hinder our potential for greatness. This work teaches us that we must operate from a place of abundance, not scarcity. Those of us in the DEI field must have the foresight to keep moving forward in the pursuit of a society where everyone can thrive.
To Dr. Marco Barker and his team, I extend my heartfelt thanks. Thank you for your courage and for creating spaces where ALL students could feel valued. To the students who relied on these spaces, know that you are not invisible. There are faculty and staff who are ready to support you, and networks that will continue to uplift you. You are not alone.
To my community, the dissolution of this department does not mean the end of DEI efforts. There are many courageous leaders across Nebraska who are committed to promoting these values and building innovative, supportive, and caring communities. Despite the rhetoric, we know that diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts are necessary, and we will continue to do the work. Adversity may push back, but we will persist, fighting for everyone—even those who oppose our efforts—because DEI work has always been, and will continue to be, about the people.
Persist on,
Cammy Watkins
